United Nations and UK government web pages were among the thousands of websites that have been attacked this week by a mysterious band of cyber-thieves.

Security experts were on Thursday struggling to pinpoint the source of the unusually well-organised attack, which has rendered visitors to thousands of websites vulnerable to “trojans” and other malicious codes.
