Broadcom, one of the biggest producers of the chips used in communications equipment, on Tuesday named the head of Philips Semiconductors as its new chief executive.

The appointment of Scott McGregor, 48, brings an executive whose unusually broad range of tech industry experience reflects the changing demands of the semiconductor business, said Henry Samueli, Broadcom's chairman.
