Putin and Stalin

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s prime minister, has marked the 70th anniversary of the second world war with a welcome attempt to ease the tensions surrounding the Soviet Union’s role in the conflict.

But his limited diplomatic gesture must not be seen as a sign Russia has launched any fundamental review of its Stalinist past.
