Gordon Brown rounded off his Budget with a plethora of education initiatives, designed to make a big impact.

“Excellence in education: my priority,” said the chancellor aiming to highlight the differences between a Labour party he hopes soon to lead and the Eton-educated David Cameron, already in charge of the Conservative Party.
