Shipowners seek global emissions trading

World shipping should be subject to an international emissions trading system similar to those for other polluting industries, the UK’s main organisation for shipowners said on Monday, in a surprise break with the industry consensus.

The call by the Chamber of Shipping marks the first time a shipping industry body has called for the sector’s inclusion in such a scheme, which could cost shipowners billions of dollars a year.
