Retailers hit by fall in consumer confidence

The pulse of the retail industry is weakening as consumer confidence wanes: that at least was the view on Wednesday among exhibitors and buyers gathering for the Spring Fair, the huge annual trade show at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

Consumer confidence, as measured by a popular survey conducted by Nationwide, fell in January to its lowest level since May 2004 when it was first conducted, according to data published on Wednesday.
