Dutch coalition talks collapse

Talks aimed at forming a new government in the Netherlands were thrown open on Monday when attempts to include the left-wing Socialist Party collapsed over policy differences with prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende’s christian democrats (CDA).

The issues between the parties proved too “numorous, difficult and in some places fundamental”, said Rein Jan Hoekstra, the mediator appointed to lead the coalition building process.
