Barroso vows to defend new Europeans

Jose' Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, yesterday vowed to defend the "new" European Union countries of eastern Europe against protectionist pressures from the west.

Mr Barroso said he remained committed to pushing for the opening of the EU's single market, in spite of fears from France and Germany that it could lead to "social dumping" by companies based in the east.
