Wen in war shrine appeal to Abe

Wen Jiabao, China’s premier, on Wednesday called on Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and other Tokyo leaders never again to visit a controversial shrine to their country’s war dead.

Mr Wen’s comments, before the first trip by a Chinese premier to Japan in seven years next week, underscore the continuing diplomatic importance Beijing places on preventing Japanese leaders from paying their respects at the Yasukuni Shrine.
