When Kalbinder Ram stuck a Conservative party by-election campaign poster in the window of his Southall bakery, he never imagined it would cause unrest in the queue for wedding cakes.

“Massive friction, massive,” says Mr Ram, shaking his head. “I’ve taken it down till I get a Labour one. Better to put up both. At least that way everyone is covered.”
