The John Lewis Partnership on Friday joined rival UK high street retailers in reporting tentative signs of a consumer recovery.

Total sales in its third quarter rose 9 per cent, with sales at the employee-owned group’s department stores increasing by 4.1 per cent, and by 12.4 per cent at its Waitrose grocery stores. The John Lewis Partnership is widely seen as a barometer of the nation’s spending.
