Fortis’s neo-classical headquarters building in central Brussels faces a park that was a crucial battleground shortly before Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830.

It is a fitting location for the bank, with the Belgians last week scoring another victory over their neighbour. Fortis took control of chunks of larger Dutch lender ABN Amro as part of the biggest financial services deal yet.
