EU urged to accelerate reforms

Europe should try to limit the damage inflicted by the global financial crisis on its economy by accelerating structural reforms and through the introduction of low-carbon technologies, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

In a speech in Brussels, Joaquín Almunia, the European Union’s monetary affairs commissioner, also said EU governments must work together to prevent protectionism and economic nationalism from turning the downturn into a more profound problem.
