Overview: US indices stage broad recovery

The mood in the markets took a turn for the better on Monday after investment bank JPMorgan Chase substantially improved its offer for stricken rival Bear Stearns and US housing data provided a positive surprise.

Although European markets remained closed for the Easter holiday, US stocks staged a broad advance and the dollar continued to rally off its recent lows.
