FTSE 100 gains on last day of 2008

London’s FTSE 100 extended its winning run to three-consecutive days as investors prepared to settle their books for 2008 and reflect on a year of pain when the benchmark index had its worst annual fall in its 24-year history.

Continuing the theme of the week, those stocks which have taken the biggest battering during the year – the miners, oil producers and banks – were at the top of the leaderboard.
