Chávez candidates sweep governorship elections

Allies of President Hugo Chávez won most of Venezuela's governorships in local elections on Sunday, authorities said on Monday, in a sweep that practically annihilates opposition control of regional power centres.

Jorge Rodríguez, director of the National Electoral Council, said preliminary results showed that pro-government candidates had won in 20 of Venezuela's 22 states, as well as the election for mayor of metropolitan Caracas.
