US urges China to account for Tiananmen

The US made one of its strongest statements for years on human rights in China on Wednesday, as Beijing intensified efforts to quell dissent over the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre.

Hillary Clinton, secretary of state, called on China to “provide a public accounting of those killed, detained or missing” after the 1989 crackdown, to “cease the harassment of participants in the demonstrations and begin dialogue with the family members of victims”.
