Outlay on identity card project reaches £215m

The Home Office has spent more than £200m ($327m) on its flagship national identity scheme, leading to accusations that the government is wasting millions propping up a project that looks increasingly vulnerable.

The disclosure comes as Alan Johnson, home secretary, on Thursday reveals what the ID cards will look like.
