Government opts for Tote auction

The government is to run an open market auction of the Tote, the state-owned bookmaker, after rejecting an offer from a consortium of racing interests because it was too low.

Gerry Sutcliffe, minister for sport, announced the move on Wednesday, saying the consortium offer had been rejected “with great regret” but said that half the net proceeds of any sale would be made available to the racing industry.
