Tony Blair's six-months spell in the European Union hotseat has just got a lot hotter; after last week's fractious summit the British prime minister knows he has to repair relations if he is going to push through a loaded agenda.

Britain is engaged in a frantic exercise in fence-mending - illustrated by the troop of French journalists heading in for dinner on Wednesday night at the UK ambassador's 18th century residence in Brussels.
