Diageo reports flat profits and cuts outlook

Diageo has defended its strategy to sell premium drinks even as falling sales of core brands such as Johnnie Walker led the beverages group to report flat 2009 profits and cut its 2010 profit outlook.

Nick Rose, Diageo’s chief financial officer, said: “Is the basic business model of premiumisation over? We feel very strongly that it’s not.”
