Belgium’s PM set to hand over

Books, files and family photos once lined Guy Verhofstadt’s office, but they are long gone. Belgium’s prime minister cleared his desk shortly after his general election defeat in June.

But eight months since he quit, he is still premier. His country wearily awaits its new government following the divisive election results. A stalemate after the polls over institutional reform triggered a political crisis and prompted concerns that linguistically divided Belgium would split.
