G20 death ‘need not be in vain’

The death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20 summit protests should mark a turning point in the increasingly tough approach the police have taken to managing demonstrations, human rights campaigners say.

Video of a police officer shoving Mr Tomlinson violently to the ground minutes before he collapsed has sparked fresh debate over whether authorities are exploiting harsher laws, more aggressive tactics and public fears of terrorism to clamp down on legitimate protests.
