Europeans more upbeat than US bosses

Simon Goodfellow, an equity strategist at ING, has found in recent months that he cannot rely on his usual economic data to help predict companies’ future performance as it is too “violent and random”.

So instead he turned to the companies themselves and trawled through the transcripts of most of the earnings calls of the large European and US groups during the past quarter.
