US chain stores continue to struggle

US retailers continued their slog through the recession in June, with only a handful of the more than 35 leading chains that reported monthly sales numbers on Thursday announcing gains.

Retail Metrics, which tracks the monthly figures, said its index of same-store sales fell 4.3 per cent for the month, slightly better than Wall Street investors had expected.
