British nannies fend off rivals from within EU

British nannies are successfully fending off competition from cheaper child-carers from European Union accession countries and commanding salaries that comfortably outstrip those enjoyed by police officers and university lecturers, a pay survey shows today.

The 10 countries that joined the EU in May 2004 have helped damp down wage inflation but also created a demand among well-heeled parents for fully qualified child-carers who can speak perfect English.
