At a time of rising unemployment in many industrialised western nations and as governments struggle with the prospect of global recession, it is easy to overlook the way that work has been changing during the past two decades.
Images of redundant office workers emptying the contents of their desks into boxes may well underline the insecurity of much corporate work today but they reflect nonetheless the enduring attachment of companies and employees to the full-time job.
