For 100 days it played host to a variety of campaigners, performers and just plain show-offs, as part of sculptor Antony Gormley’s “One and Other” art project.

But a more solemn ceremony stilled the air at Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth on Wednesday when a statue commemorating Sir Keith Park, the Battle of Britain’s “unsung hero”, was unveiled to a respectful public.
