Plan to help MPs pay back expenses

Hard-up members of parliament could be allowed to defer the repayment of expenses claims demanded by Sir Thomas Legg, it emerged on Tuesday, as a host of senior politicians agreed to refund tens of thousands of pounds.

All three party leaders have called on their MPs to pay back expenses deemed excessive, in spite of fury in Westminster over the approach taken by Sir Thomas’s independent inquiry.
