New York mayor pays high price for narrow victory

Michael Bloomberg has won a third term as mayor of New York but with a much reduced majority, even after spending about $90m on his re-election campaign.

The former Wall Street trader and founder of the financial information company that bears his name had to make do with a five-point margin over his Democratic rival, Bill Thomson, after winning a second term in 2005 with a 20-point win.
