Next damps prospects of retail recovery

Tight stock control helped Next avoid a summer profit warning as like-for-like sales fell by less than forecast.

The fashion and homewares retailer continued to suffer from a long-term sales decline at established stores, with a 2.4 per cent fall in the second quarter. Market share data also showed the company had been losing ground in the past few weeks.
