Rise in National Insurance could cost 57,000 jobs

Business groups are urging the government to abandon plans to raise National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for small companies, after an influential research group calculated that the effort to raise tax could end up costing 57,000 jobs.

A study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) found that the proposed 0.5p increase in NICs from April 2011 would only generate a modest improvement in the public finances.
