Local societies go national

Smaller building societies are easing “locals-only” restrictions on savings accounts as intense competition for deposits continues in the year-old credit crisis.

But in offering more savings deals nationally, these mutually-owned minnows are creating opportunities for so-called “carpetbaggers” to open some high-paying accounts that could yield windfalls were societies to be taken over.
