Deal would create retail overlap

A merger of Lloyds TSB and HBOS would form a UK retail bank with dominant market shares in a number business areas including mortgages, credit cards and unsecured lending.

If a deal were to go ahead, it could result in a large scale rationalisation of the businesses, including potential branch closures and job losses, as cost savings were made to make sense of the merger.
