The next-generation games console war turned into a social networking battle yesterday as Microsoft unveiled a new interface for the Xbox 360.

On the eve of the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft showed off a Windows Vista-style 3D interface and said players could create their own character or avatar for the console.
