For anyone who owned property in the recession of the early 1990s, the phrase “negative equity” has an irredeemably chilling ring to it.

The current downturn has reintroduced a nervous nation to the concept of a home that may be worth less than the mortgage on which it is secured. Now for the first time the Financial Times can reveal the parts of the country where homeowners are most at risk.
