UN calls for calm after death of Kosovo leader

United Nations officials overseeing the Balkan territory of Kosovo have appealed for calm and unity following the death on Saturday of Ibrahim Rugova, the Kosovo president.

They were responding to concerns that, though the 61-year-old former professor’s death from cancer was not unexpected, it could spark arguments among other leaders of Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian population and possibly exacerbate tensions between the ethnic Albanian majority and the ethnic Serb minority.
