Spain’s Socialist government on Tuesday vowed to block foreign takeovers of Spanish energy companies after it was presented with Eon’s bid for Endesa.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that Spain’s energy companies remain Spanish,” Fernando Moraleda, a government spokesman, said on Tuesday. “The government believes Spain should have strong national companies with independent decision-making power in strategic sectors such as energy.”
