The labour pains have been intense and at times the parents despaired, but on Wednesday shareholders of Suez and Gaz de France assisted at the birth of a new energy champion to rival Germany’s Eon and France’s EDF.

Investors in both companies on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved the merger that will create GDF Suez, a gas and electricity company with power-related sales second only to Eon and ahead of EDF.
