Michael Jackson, one of the most successful but controversial figures in the history of pop music, has died aged 50 in Los Angeles.

Jackson’s hits such as “Thriller” and “Billie Jean” earned him an estimated $300m (£182m), but the lavish expenses of his often eccentric lifestyle left him increasingly short of cash in recent years.
