Tax windfall in prospect for UK companies

Tax authorities will be forced to repay hundreds of millions of pounds to UK companies owned by European-based multinationals after a landmark ruling on Wednesday morning by Britain's highest court.

 The House of Lords ruling came in a test-case brought by Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, the UK investment banking arm of the German bank, and centred on the extent to which claims to recover tax which had been levied unlawfully could be backdated.
