Financials take brunt of losses amid broader slide

Wall Street stocks were on course to end a volatile week with their biggest losses since the start of the year after the unemployment rate reached a five-year high, sparking renewed fears of recession.

Yesterday, the spike in the jobless rate, which has reached 6.1 per cent, conspired with a rise in the home foreclosures to drag markets further into bear market territory.
