Ireland to extend bank guarantee

Ireland has addressed European Commission concerns by extending its bank deposit guarantee to cover those foreign-owned banks based in Ireland that have a “significant” operation in the Republic.

This was one of the issues raised by Brussels in discussions with the Irish earlier this week, following Dublin’s announcement that it was guaranteeing €400bn of liabilities at its six largest Irish owned lenders in a bid to stabilise the financial markets.
