Slovak border police fight losing battle with traffickers on EU's eastern front

On the European Union's new eastern frontier, Slovakia's small, badly equipped border police force finds itself on the front line in the struggle to prevent ruthless criminal gangs from smuggling everything from illegal immigrants to contraband cigarettes westwards.

Border crossings with Ukraine, such as Ubla, offer the contradictory sight of cars backed up for hours as police search every vehicle, while villagers walk back and forth bringing in cheap Ukrainian cigarettes and spirits.
