Europeans urge firm stance in trade talks

Government ministers, farmers and car manufacturers yesterday piled pressure on the European Union's trade negotiators to stand firm or even harden their position in next week's crucial round of talks in Geneva.

At the same time the European Commission threw its weight behind a plan, questioned by Germany and others, to distribute €1bn ($1.6bn, £800m) in unspent EU agricultural funds to farmers in Africa.
