Chris Ronnie, chief executive of JJB Sports, insisted on Monday his company was in “good financial health” after he issued a tranche of shares to its rival chain Sports Direct in return for a cash injection ahead of the all-important Christmas trading season.

Mr Ronnie struck a deal with Mike Ashley, his friend and former employer, late last week. The companies announced the deal after the market closed on Friday.
