John Maynard Keynes has been much invoked in the quest for solutions to the downturn and now his principles are being quoted as a reason for the resurgence of smaller gold watches for women. “He noticed that, in uncertain times, people see lasting value in gold and precious stones,” says Nicolas Bos, CEO Van Cleef and Arpels.

“This may be at the back of their minds now – they are investing for decades, or to pass to the next generation.”
