Outgoing head’s key role in expansion

When Peter Sutherland became chairman at BP 12 years ago, it was still what was sometimes described as a “two pipeline company”, heavily dependent on its fields in the North Sea and Alaska.

Together with Lord Browne, chief executive until 2007, he led the company’s transformation into a global business through a series of big acquisitions.
