Brussels urges easing of rules on mergers

Günter Verheugen, the European Union's industry commissioner, has called for a rethink of the rules governing mergers in the EU, to make it easier for companies to form "European champions".

He told Le Monde, the French newspaper: "We have to discuss the manner in which we deal with mergers, in the general interest of Europe.
