Pru’s new chairman defends stock lending

Harvey McGrath, the new chairman of Prudential, has defended the lending of shares to hedge funds by insurers, a practice that underpins short-selling and which has come under fire from some rivals.

“My view, from first principles, is . . . being able to short, just as [being able to] go long, is an important part of the market’s function,” he said.
